Allegra is developed as a substitute to the antihistamine terfenadine. Exposure to allergens like pet fur, pollen, dust and mites leads to production of a chemical called histamine by the body causing allergic reactions like runny nose, sneezing, itchy and watery eyes. Allegra works against these histamines produced by the body.
Besides the active ingredient Fexofenadine Hydrochloride, a second generation antihistamine that doesn’t readily enter the patient’s bloodstream, Allegra is made of inactive ingredients such as magnesium stearate, croscarmellose, microcrystalline cellulose and pregelatinized starch.
Allegra, designed for oral consumption, is sold in tablet form. It is available in strengths of 30mg, 60mg and 180 mg. Although the dosage may vary according to the patient’s medical history and other related factors , the generally recommended dosage of Allegra is as follows:
*For seasonal allergies: 60 mg of Allegra twice a day or 180mg once a day for adults and children above 12 years of age; 30mg of Allegra twice a day for children in the age group of 6-11 years.
*For chronic urticaria (hives): 60mg twice a day for adults and children above 12 years of age; 30mg twice a day for children between 6 and 11 years.
Dos and don’ts while taking Allegra
*Allegra may be taken on empty stomach or after food.
*Read the instructions on the label thoroughly and in case of any doubt, go for medical consultation.
*Do not take Allegra along with or close to a dose of an antacid that contains aluminium or magnesium.
*Never take an overdose of Allegra under any circumstances.
*Stay off alcohol or to consume it in moderation.
*Avoid too much direct exposure to sunlight and use a good sunscreen since Allegra may increase the skin’s sensitivity to sunlight.
*Chew sugar free gum as Allegra may cause a dry mouth in some cases. However, if the dry mouth condition persists for a long time, seek medical advice.
*Store the drug at room temperature, away from moisture and heat.
The effect that Allegra has during pregnancy is not fully known and therefore, it is advisable that a pregnant woman or one planning pregnancy consult with a doctor before using Allegra. Likewise, nursing mothers should also seek a doctor’s advice before starting with the drug. The drug should not be accessible to children & pets.
Patients having any allergy towards Fexofenadine or any other ingredients used in Allegra should not use Allegra. Inform a doctor in case there are any unusual symptoms upon taking the drug.
