Coloxyl Drops (poloxamer) are used to soften stools in infants up to 3 years of age. The medication is easily administered by adding to feeding bottles, juice or other fluids.

Constipation is a common problem among infants which is usually brought on by dietary changes. Rarely, however, constipation may be a symptom of a more serious issue. Chronic or severe constipation should be brought to the attention of a doctor.

Coloxyl is used in patients of all ages, however those over 3 years of age typically take tablets.

Coloxyl Drops Overview

Constipation occurs when stools are too dry to pass easily, which can also lead to infrequent movements. Coloxyl works by encouraging the colon to secrete fluids, which are then absorbed by stools. The softened stools are then easier to pass.

Symptoms of constipation include:

• Less frequent movements than normal
• Straining to pass stools
• Painful movements
• Dry, lumpy stools
• Bloating
• Tender abdomen
• Appetite loss
• Irritable mood

As nearly everyone has experienced constipation at some time or another, we all know how uncomfortable it can be. Coloxyl drops offer a safe, gentle solution for even the youngest constipation sufferers.

Coloxyl drops come in vials containing 30 mL of 10% poloxamer solution. A syringe is included for precise measuring. Drops are administered three times per day until stools are again passing normally. The medication can be mixed with any fluid or in wet foods such as apple sauce or most baby foods.

Dosage depends on the age of the patient:

• Under 6 months - 0.3 mL three times per day.
• 6 to 18 months - 0.5 mL three times per day.
• 18 months to 3 years - 0.8 mL three times per day.
• Over 3 years - use Coloxyl tablets instead.

The medication is used as-needed when constipation occurs, however it should not be needed on a continuous basis. If stool movements are not back to normal after several days, seek the advice of a physician. Often simple dietary changes can resolve the issue.

Precautions & Side Effects

Coloxyl drops are quite safe if used as directed, with the most common side effects being:

• Flatulence
• Stomach cramps

Used in high doses or over the long term, the medication may cause diarrhea. Untreated, diarrhea can lead to dehydration and other complications. If diarrhea does occur, stop using Coloxyl Drops; if diarrhea persists, seek medical attention.

Coloxyl can cause mild stomach cramps after administration but before stools are passed. The resulting discomfort may cause colic-like symptoms (crying for no apparent reason). This is generally not cause for concern unless it persists past stool movements, which should ease any stomach upset.

The medication is formulated to be safe for use in infants with common allergies. Coloxyl drops do not contain:

• Gluten
• Lactose
• Dairy
• Nuts
• Egg
• Soy

In addition to the active ingredient poloxamer, Coloxyl Drops contain: Ethanol, glycerol, purified water, sorbic acid, caramel and milk chocolate flavoring.
